All the Skills: A deck building RPG
Written by Honour Rae and preformed by Luke Daniels this Lit RPG is one of the most recent audiobooks that I finished. This is more of a review on books one and two of the series (the only two out as of the writing of this review) not just the first book. The first book is about 13 and a half hours and the second is 16 and half.
Narrator: Luke Daniels is good enough. He doesn't in my opinion do anything particularly egregious in his narration but he also doesn't do anything great either. He has a wide enough range in voices to not make all of the characters sound the same and I never find that he distracts from the story. Could he maybe do more? I feel like he could, but I would gladly listen to anything he narrates.
LIT RPG Elements: No annoying sound effects and limited prompt dumps. Actually very few "Dumps" at all which I prefer in my Lit RPGs. No character sheet readouts (I also like this). I actually think they did a perfect job giving you enough to feel like a Lit RPG without killing your attention span with Prompt readouts and spam.
Setting: It takes place in a fantasy world that is simple to understand but complex enough to not be boring. The story is very much a fun time if not an in depth one. The world takes from already existing elements such as Dragons and magic abilities but puts a unique spin on it that really works and keeps you interested.
MC/Characters: Not much to complain about here. I like the main character even if I don't always agree with what he does. The other characters in the story I cannot complain too much about. The author does a good job of not making them all black and white. You don't necessarily know who is going to be on the main characters side or not and that works really well with keeping tension.
Story: Its good, I like it, nuff said. Buuuuuut if you want a taste its about a young boy who through a stroke of luck or misfortune is granted a great power. He has to navigate the world with this power and most importantly, keep it a secret. The magic system is based off of a simple to understand card system that works really well. It's unique in the Lit RPG world and that's refreshing. I honestly don't want to go too much further into details because I think the books are worth the listen.
Overall Review: The first two books in the series are really good so far. The first book starts a little slow but the second is exciting from start to finish. I really enjoyed these books and would recommend them to anyone who likes Lit RPGs and if you have no idea what a Lit RPG is I would still recommend it. It’s not a deep dive into character growth and development. It's not breaking down the walls of the human psyche and making you think too inwardly but, it's very entertaining. Was well worth the price.
